TERM 3: Life Casting - Hands, Faces, Feet | Term Three, 2024

Learn mould making processes which will enable you to successfully cast realistic copies of hands, feet and faces, right down to the smallest of details.
This is a collaborative workshop where students help each other to make their projects and in so doing, learn all aspects of the casting and mould making processes.
Objects created in this class can be further developed into projects involving such materials as bronze, glass, latex prosthetics, ceramics or cement.
Suitable for all levels of experience.

Content

* Look at a variety of examples of life casts
* Health and safety issues explained
* Demonstration of the process
* Group projects where all aspects of creating the mould are experienced by each student through collaboration
* Creating a mother case
* Removing the alginate mould
* Mixing plaster
* Pouring the plaster into the mould
* Removing the positive from the mould
* Clean up and finishing off
* Discussion about context and possibilities of this process and how it can be applied to other mediums

Objectives

* Create at least one life cast in plaster per student working as a collaborative group
* Experience all aspects of the mould making and casting processes
* Create life castings using all best practice guidelines

Outcomes

* Have at least one completed plaster cast
* A working knowledge of all aspects of the process involved in casting with dental alginate and plaster
* Follow safe practice guidelines
* An understanding of how adapt this process to other mediums
* As this is a collaborative class all students are expected to gain experience in working in a collaborative way with others

* 400gm dental alginate
* Dust mask
* 4kg plaster
* 2-3 rolls plaster bandage

Note - You can negotiate to purchase a 400gm bag of dental alginate with your fellow classmates to minimise costs and focus on smaller projects. Please discuss what can be achieved with your tutor.
