What do you do when someone tells you to cut off all your hair? Hair you’d grown long over many years.
Royd Tolkien’s first gut reaction was ‘No way!’ But then he cut all his hair off. Why? Because his little brother Mike asked him to. Cutting short his once long hair, was one challenge from a list of 50 that his brother had tasked him with. Doing standup comedy at a gay comedy club was another.
Failure IS an option
The only difference between a master and a beginner is that the master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried. When going through a creative process, every artist, designer, inventor and engineer will experience setbacks and failures; moments when things go wrong.

Jennie Sherwin – a contemporary jeweller and graduate from The Learning Connexion – was invited to submit pieces into the Artistar Jewels 2017 exhibition. She had two pieces selected which were displayed in the Palazzo Giureconsulti in Milan during Milan Fashion Week from 23-26 February 2017.

Creativity Talk: Matt Sharp
Matt Sharp is a freelance cinematographer with 15 years experience capturing moving image for film. He recently won 'Best National' and 'Best Regional (Wellington)' cinematography awards in the 2016 48HR Film Challenge. He is also a member of staff working onsite at The Learning Connexion.

Recently, Keith Grinter spent two days helping international artist, Dane Mitchell, make 'Meteorological Phenomenon' – canes of hot glass pulled out over sand.
Keith runs the Grinter Glass blowing studio in Whangarei and is also a distance learning mentor at The Learning Connexion. He teaches workshops on glass blowing using the shard pick-up technique as well as creating painted and blown work.

The finalists of the 2017 National Contemporary Art Award have been announced, with 51 artworks by 49 artists from across New Zealand selected.
Included among the finalists are Mel Ford, ceramics tutor, from The Learning Connexion, with ‘Frame and Line’ and ‘Reading Between The Lines’, and graduate, Sebastien Jaunas, with ‘Chrysalid’.
