Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced)

This is a one year full-time, (two years part-time), NZQA level 7 programme, equivalent to the third year of an undergraduate degree.

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) builds on the principles explored in the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Honours) and is a stand alone qualification. Entry is by interview and portfolio and application is open to students who have completed the Honours programme, or equivalent work elsewhere.

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) has three main principles: advanced diploma

  • To embrace all media
  • That materials and processes are of primary interest in respect to how they hold meaning in the work of art
  • The practice is the theory

The Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) is comprised of studio based work developed from briefs and independent research. At the end of the programme all students exhibit their work, demonstrating their creativity and the rigour of their practice. At this level the  process of art-making re-examines procedures which are often overlooked. Students learn by doing, developing new ways of viewing materials and experiencing a fresh approach to critiquing art. The programme is taught through briefs and a series of discussions. It is taught by various tutors who combine different, but complementary, experience and skills.

The programme has three main components:

  • Studio practice with instruction and critique, expanded through independent study
  • Seminars, discussions, digital media and readings
  • Elective studies that focus on professional practice

The balance of activities changes as the year progresses. There are up to four one-week block classes within the programme each year. Students may apply to the Academic Board for consideration to shape their programme to align more specifically with their existing practice.

Students in the Diploma of Art and Creativity (Advanced) receive the programme via a combination of:

  • Written information
  • On-site block classes (up to four per year)
  • Distance/digital delivery
  • One to one tutor critique via telephone or internet
  • Couriered work

All Advanced level students participate in:

  • our digital delivery system, the Workroom
  • on-site block classes, or equivalent activity from home.
