My work has always been inspired by my surroundings as much as my internal landscape; it is a dialogue/communication between me as art maker and the world – nature, places, people and things. I engage in that dialogue through form and image; two-dimensional and sculptural work.
My art is a language to me. This language continues to evolve as I use new materials and respond to new stimulus. My sculptural forms are often inspired by nature, the elements, living by the south coast of Wellington New Zealand. My paintings are mostly inspired by the way the material behaves, but there is a cross over in all my work between my inspirations and the nature of my materials.
I mix carving and painting, using materials like plywood and plastic along with timber and stone, juxtaposing manufactured with natural materials and blending them. I like working with the contrasting and similar elements within the materials to express the idea of culture and nature meeting and engaging with each other.
