JJMorgan and Co.

J.J. Morgan & Co is the newest addition to the Wellington gallery community. Like the Southerly winds that berate nearby Lyall Bay, the artist-run gallery is stirring up a fresh perspective in the local art scene; bringing together up-and-coming artists, curators, and some more established names to explore and stretch the boundaries of the gallery environment. Rather than cloning the function and structure of existing contemporary art spaces, J.J. Morgan & Co is focused on shaping an organization that meets the art community’s needs. In conjunction with presenting contemporary visual art experiences, the gallery is collaborating with individuals or groups that exist on the fringes, or outside of the arts community, and bringing them into a professional environment.
It’s a free-form working space, with studios alongside the gallery, and the capacity to host artist and/or curatorial residencies. The aim of the organisation is to develop performance and exhibition based outcomes, whilst also allowing for new experiences and work to take shape. Perhaps as surprising as the open and all-encompassing nature of the space, is the fact that it’s self-funded by three individuals (Andrew Black, Katrina Jobsis, Justin Jade Morgan). The trio are dedicated to supporting the development and creative output of artists, designers, and curators from New Zealand and abroad. With a combined experience of over 25 years in the arts – Andrew, Katrina, and Justin bring together a fusion of fashion design, hands on activity, computer / web graphics, curatorial and museum/gallery experience. Recognising that they’re each part of an artistically dynamic and diverse community these individuals have come together to extend a helping hand.
JJMorgan and Co is based at 3 Cruickshank Street, between Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay, Wellington, New Zealand.
