Creative Tip

Image of a painting

One of my extramural students (Merle Bradshaw) came up with this great idea which I thought might be of use to others.

If you’ve gotten to a point with your painting or drawing where you’re not sure how to continue, or you have an idea but unsure whether it will work, paint or draw the idea onto a piece of transparent plastic (OHP transparency is ideal) and pop it over top of the dry artwork. You’ll get a reasonably good sense of whether your idea will work or not before committing to it and you’ll also be giving your creative brain cells a bit of a work-out in terms of brainstorming and resolving design and composition considerations.

(Image): In response to one of the DVD exercises, Merle has created an abstract painting on paper and, after the paint has dried, considered how she might take the painting further. She’s used black felt pen to draw her idea onto OHP transparency and stapled it on top of the painting, along with some written notes and popped it into her visual diary as a future reference.
